What's for breakfast?

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I'm going to make a statement here and then I'll probably be bombarded with emails and comments about why I should have this important meal but before you do, please read the column right through to the end, then let's talk :)

I do not like breakfast. There, I've said it. I have a variety of quirks about this meal such as the time I want to eat it, what kind of dishes I should be served and when I want to have it. You can read all about it here.

What I will say here is that I only like savoury dishes for breakfast, keep the scones, jams, jellies, marmalades, tea-rings, buns, muffins and sweet breads for afternoon tea. (lol) Here are some of the foods I enjoy whenever I decide that I want to have breakfast-which is not often.

Breakfast sausages, bacon, eggs and homemade hashbrown potatoes rule the day!

I always attack the sausages first.

Then there are times I just like to opt for fried eggs but they must come served with lots of green onions and hot chilies!

Bakes, I love the bakes made in Guyana and known as floats in Trinidad & Tobago. They can be stuffed with anything, but are most frequently eaten with fried saltfish cooked with lots of tomatoes and onions.

Sada roti for breakfast is another favourite of mine. I like it hot, sliced in half and buttered! Or served with tomato choka or eggplant choka.

Cynthia, with a breakfast like the one you just showcased, I won't scold you but those sausages look yummy!

Never fear Cynthia - there are others like you! I am not a breakfast person normally (although I love breakfast foods both sweet and savoury) because I am not a morning person and try whenever possible to wake up with JUST enough time to get ready and head out the door. Since I need time for my stomach to get ready for food...I can't face breakfast like that. On those occasions when I wake up early and prepare for the day in the morning, I have enough time to feel hungry and consider breakfast.
The non-breakfast person makes it difficult during Ramadan though, and I still get boof from my mother when I don't eat then :-D

Lilandra said...

I wasn't into it either. I couldn't drink water too early in the morning...
And then when I used to go to school, eating breakfast in the morning used to make me sick..it was at least an hour's drive to school so it was usually better to not have breakfast than be even more car sick.

Oh, with regards to "float", I'm trini and I grew up calling it "bake" not "float". For example, when you go to maracas you buy "bake and shark". But chennette says some people call it float.

Cynthia, Its impossible for me to eat something at breakfast!! I only drink black coffee with lots of sugar. But once I saw your breakfast table, with that egg and sausages and.....my mouth is watering over the desktop.

With you 100% It's a secret in our house that I don't eat breakfast. I do think though that I'm going to have to start as the children will sooner or later cotton on to the fact. I love brunch! Much more civil time to eat.

I understand what you mean by feeling full at breakfast. I felt the same way too, for a long, long, time. But now I have a light breakfast of papaya ... and a heavy dinner, when I should be doing quite the opposite. Sausages at breakfast are to die for, tho' I don't make them at home.

Mmmmm, everything looks great! I love breakfast, lunch, dinner & everything in between :D

Yummm. Those fried eggs( my favorite) topped with green onions and chilies look great. I had a god father from Trinidad and always enjoyed Roti with curried goat as a child. I'd love the recipe for your roti.

I love a breakfast of Sweet Italian sausage, eggs and hash browns, with an English muffin and marmalade on the side. Well, that's a couple things for afternoon tea, there. ;-)

Yes, we don't have time for breakfast most of our lives. What can be done? Getting up any earlier is not an option. no no no

And thanks for the comment on my blog. Tortoises are wise indeed. They wonder about us, I bet. ;)

Cynthia, I am with you on having savory dishes for breakfast, but breakfast I must have. Love the sada roti and tomato choka.
How about idli, dosai, poori, paniyaram - there that should entice you to eat breakfast. I survive on eating everything bread, oatmeal even pancake with some pickles :)

Awesome Post on Breakfast Cynthia..:)..

oooooooooh, love breakfasts like this, but alas rarely have it. I just hog on such perfect breakfasts during vacations. Yes and omlette needs to have onions (not green ones for me) and chillies.

I was a bit surprised to see the word "chokha" here. Where I grew up in Bihar, this word was heard a lot

I am not that big of a fan of breakfast either. We make a nice weekend breakfast but weekdays are just coffee and a banana for me :)

I love your fried eggs with green onions and bird chilies though. YUM!

I am exactly the same. The very thought of cereal makes me shudder. I much prefer savoury food in the mornings, although I find it hard to face any food at all till I have been awake at least an hour!

Cynthia, I first read your post just after breaky! And lady, I want to fly to the other side of the world just for this!

I get seriously grumpy if I don't eat first thing in the morning but it's usually a rushed bowl of cereal or slice of toast. A fried breakfast on an occasional Sunday morning is a wonderful thing!

Susan said...

What a scandalous confession, Cynthia! ; )

I AM a breakfast person (my brain needs the carb fuel & caffeine), but I do prefer the stick-to-the-ribs, gorgeous savory dishes you've prepared. I would have no problem eating curries in the morning, how very "un-American" of me. : D

Kelly-Jane said...

I need time between getting up and eating too.

Those sausages are calling out to me, and the hash browns, well everything really!

Jeena said...

I'm with you Cynthia I can't bare anything sweet in the mornings either.
I am fussy over breakfast it has to be something I 'feel like eating' otherwise I have an early dinner instead. It is recomended you eat breakfast for health reasons sure...I used to eat breakfast without fail in the past but it didn't stop me having any health problems.

Anyway what about when humans lived in caves.... I bet they didn't get fed till the husbands went hunting anyways :D Hey when I saw your breakfast I thought it was an English fry up? :)

Sig said...

My feelings exactly! Who even invented sweet breakfast? :) Although, I pretty much end up eating a serial bar or a muffin for breakfast anyway... but I would love a plate of any of these yummy items you have here, if I had a choice... (aka if I wasn't so lazy :( )

Sylvia said...

Don´t worry , Cinthia, I am not a breakfast person . I only take a cup of coffee and is all right for me. But when I travel or when I had guests I really consider breakfast.

Elle said...

Although I am a breakfast person (blame my Mom)I know lots of people who don't care for breakfast. The choices you show look pretty yummy to me, although I'd skip the hot chilies on the eggs. Wish I could send you some local turkey sausages...they look alot like yours and you would probably love 'em, especially the spicy ones. Doubt I could get them through customs.

Mallow said...

I'm with you - no sugar until after lunch please!

I got tired of eating sausages and eggs in hotel buffet breakfasts. How I wish to get that fried egg with onions and chili (maybe plus a dash of dark soy) with some fried vermiceilli.

I'm not a huge breakfast fan either, however if you were making my breakfast I'd eat every bite! Looks delish.

Hi Cynthia. I'm with you. I was never a big breakfast eater. An espresso is usually it. Sometimes I add a cookie or biscuit to dunk :)But if I am on vacation, then I LOVE breakfast...probably because I get up near lunch time? haha

Cynthia, you're a celebrity! :)

I love your writing. And I totally agree about being against the dessert-style breakfast thing! And given that you don't really like breakfast, these are pretty awesome pictures :)

Hi Cynthia, hope u had a quiet weekend this time, Love your collection of breakfasts.
One thing I can't do in the morning rush is having breakfast, eat a cereal bar at desk with cuppa and thats divine to me!!
Weekends I try to make soem traditional dishes like idli, upma n dosas as Noel loves them.

Hah, I so get the savory breakfast thing! I'm happiest with an omlette and hashbrowns if I'm at a restaurant, peanut butter on toast if I'm at home, or even better, dinner leftovers from the day before. Salad for breakfast is not unheard of!

Lissie said...

cynthia, loved your American breakfast display! but i would advise you to avoid it or better have it once in a blue moon! go for the sada roti and chokas :)) girl, don't avoid breakfast beacause thats when you need energy the most.
those guana buns, roti and chokas look delicious!

The picture of that breakfast looked so delicious. When my cousins come over I make a similar breakfast for them much to my female cousin's chagrin. She knows she won't be able to resist it, and will have to pause from her perpetual mother guilted into diet. I enjoy preparing breakfast, but admittedly, when I was in school and working, I never ever stopped to make/have breakfast. I too find it uncomfortable to eat breakfast during the breakfast hour. It's too early to eat, but after 10 Im good, and just slide breakfast down to ten. That is my breakfast hour hehe.
When I was growing up my mother would not send us out the house with out breakfast. American style breakfast during the week and west indian on the weekends. Good memories and great article.

My husband does not like the sweet stuff for breakfast, either!! We actually end up eating breakfast for dinner quite often - and my husband is the designated "breakfast maker." He has a wonderful way of making the perfect eggs and sausage!

I totally agree with you about breakfast being too early. I'm a night person and actually feel sick if I eat too early in the morning, so I just delay it. My favorite meal of the week is brunch, because you get breakfast food, but it's late and leisurely. I do have to disagree about the sweet stuff though. I love me some scones, muffins and other pastries! ; )

Sausages. Cynthia, I am seriously considering going totally veg after the first of the year. Now I know I have to have a real English Breakfast first ;)

And Fried Bakes??? Now that looks fantabulous :):)

Miri said...

I have to have to have breakfast, but I know what you mean when you say you aren't a breakfast person, I think there are many people like that. Its like the morning persons and the non morning persons!

I like savoury foods for breakfast too and not sweet stuff, so cornflakes/cereal usually makes a very rare appearance at our tables. The sausages and fried eggs look wonderful, and so does the chokha - guess its somewhat like "bharta".

Visual treat indeed!!! ..i used to skip breakfast until i fell sick..and so back to having regular breakfast..
Look at you attacking the sausages...haa

Cynthia - breakfast for me can be elaborate only on Sundays. No other day can make me take extra efforts for a balanced breaking the fast!!! Its just plain simple cereal & milk & some biscottis for me n hubby almost all the time, unless I have some leftovers to stuff into sandwiches.

Blv me I have never even felt the difference on a day having a perfect b/fast & having an imperfect one. Its another story that if I totally miss out on breakfast then my stomach is grumbling by the time its lunch time.

However, your spread looks gorgeous, & as usual your writing & pics are a treat to the eyes

Here my hubby and daughter says thazt i should do this elabroated breakfast more often and i tell them it is not that good so much things for a breakfast ofcourse i am hidding my pure laziness saying it is not good :-)

Cynthia, my eldest brother is solidly in your camp. He likes to say that ANYTHING can be eaten for breakfast, so he doesn't necessarily stick to even eggs and sausage. He'll even eat a salad or pasta for breakfast!

But I'm with you, too, in that I'm more inclined towards savory dishes for breakfast than sweet ones. (I'll leave the salad for my bro!)

i use to hate breakfast...coz im such a non-morning person and when i wake up its already lunch...and this situation even worsen when i met my husband. For him breakfast is very important and he cant stand the smell of salty stuffs in the morning. He is just a croissant and coffee person...but at the course of time i learned how to appreciate breakfast (we take it at anytime convenient for us)and he learned too to take his croissant while i devour my salty stuffs (let say fried rice and dried fish) :-), great blog you've got here

Your breakfast table looks like a hotel breakfast buffet at a Swedish hotel, Cynthia. They serve cheese, ham, sausage, egg, bread, yogurt, granola or cereals, juice, coffee, tea, fruit.... My breakfast only gives me a good start to the day, and I can´t eat that much in the morning.

I can't eat a lot for breakfast as I teach aerobics and Pilates right after and jumping up ad down on a full stomach is not that great but I never skip it. My favorite is always fresh fruit(kiwi/berries) and some yogurt. I love savry breakfasts on sundays like sausages, hashbrowns and egg white omelettes (can't stand the taste of cooked yolks, except in cakes, ahahah!!!). You made a lovely spread!

Great post and article! Your pictures were completely delicious.

I, in no way, agree with you about breakfast for myself, but I defend your right to feel that way. The times I've wanted a fast breakfast, I've found the best one is a combination of a protein and a carbohydrate - a piece of whole wheat bread with a slice of turkey or cheese. When I was a kid, I used to eat a piece of toast with mayonnaise! But curry in any form? How yummy, I'd go for that...

Christine said...

Yum! I love eggs and sausage and tomatoes, whether they're for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner.
But, my husband makes steel cut oatmeal every morning with chunks of apple so I, like a good girl, eat my oatmeal...
and dream of sausages. :)

I just wanted to let you all know that while this breakfast looks wildly indulgent, I only have it about twice a year if that many times :) And like I said in the column, someone would have to make it for me :) the only reason I made it myself this time is because I had to take the pics :) and for the record, I had 3/4 of 1 saugage and half an egg and 1 piece of bacon :) So my conscience is clear. (lol)

I want to thank all the people that are firmly in the no-sweet at breakfast camp, acknowledge the breakfast lovers among us - sweet and savoury and to let those that reiterated that breakfast is the most important meal, know that I hear you and thank you for loving me where I'm at :D
