With Age Comes Cooking Wisdom?

>> Saturday, 27 June 2009

I made pizza for the first time several weeks ago and marvelled at how well it turned out... As I stepped back to admire my work, I must admit, along with my pride, I felt a twinge of embarrassment; I realized I had not needed to buy the special pizza pan to make pan perfect pizza. Thin-curst pizza with proscuitto, ham, salami, pineapple, basil pesto & fresh mozzarella

I think that birthdays make us all a little philosophical. One thing I’ve come to realize is that I’ve become increasingly fearless in the kitchen. I think this is because, as I’ve become older, I’ve come to recognize that perfection is relative and the ability to adjust and adapt (equipment, ingredients, whatever) is a mark of resourcefulness. Read the column here.

Thanks to you, all my friends, who have been flooding my inbox with birthday wishes. You have a special place in my heart. Thank you so very much.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Making pizza is one of the joys I share with our girls. I usually don't eat the stuff, but when it's homemade, especially when our girls are involved.. YUM!

Hope you had a GRAND day!

Cynthia Happy Belated birthday,
Oh yum who doesn't love pizza. I gave up store bought long ago - it's too expensive and making pizza is such a fun family activity. Your pizza reminds me that I've been promising to experiment with different toppings for a while now. It's so easy to get stuck in a rut when you are battling the nine to five.

Erica June 27, 2009 10:08 PM

I love fruit on pizza. Yours looks absolutely delicious.

Rhyleysgranny June 28, 2009 5:07 AM

Nina Timm June 29, 2009 7:43 AM

I think very few Italians actually use a pizza pan, but we all get caught up in buying unnecessary gadgets for the kitchen sometimes!! The pizza looks divine and I love the addition of the pesto!!!

♥Rosie♥ June 29, 2009 10:07 AM

A true beauty in the pizza world thats for sure!!

I also must wish you a very Happy Birthday!!!

Rina June 29, 2009 11:53 AM

That pizza looks FANTASTIC :) Pizza is definitely my favorite food, I'm glad you made it!

I, too, have more than a few dishes I'm scared of. Risotto, souffle and most Asian food comes to mind...

Peter M June 29, 2009 4:12 PM

Pizza has to be one of or perhaps THE most popular food worldwide.

A fine version rests here, hope you shared some pizza on your B-day.

sree June 29, 2009 4:19 PM

Pizza looks absolutely mouthwatering..mmmmmm

JehanP June 29, 2009 6:19 PM

Happy belated..and this pizza looks awesome. I love the ham/pineapple combo so I know I would love this. I have a small favor to ask...I need the recipe to guyana white fudge..nobody I know seems to know how to make this and searching the internet for a recipe is a waste of time. Im currently chowing down on a batch brought straight from guyana...yum!! Thx for any help on this.

Linda June 29, 2009 9:29 PM

Belated, but Happy, Happy birthday wishes to you, Cynthia dear! Pizza looks fantastic... somehow I can't picture you as anything but fearless in the kitchen!!

BTW, when you make Yorkshire pudding, do try it in the big pan the first time. Popover size is just not the same -- it's more like eating, well, a popover ;)

Also, unless you have a very fat roast, it helps to augment drippings with some hot melted butter in the bottom of your pudding pan :)

Coby June 30, 2009 2:27 AM

Lately I am cooking my pizza on the barbecue which further shows that you don't need the fancy doo-dads to make excellent pizza. Your pizza looks amazing Cynthia and a happy belated birthday:D

I think you can live with that very minor embarrassment, Cynthia! The pizza looks absolutely delicious... when are you going to offer take-outs? ;-)

Little Chef July 03, 2009 10:31 AM

Hi Cynthia! Happy Belated B'day! I think you are very right to say with Age comes Wisdom in & around the kitchen.

Your pizza looks simply divine! I love the way you photograph your food creations :)

Aparna July 03, 2009 11:54 PM

So I'm late again with the wishes. :)
Belated but heartfelt birthday wishes to you.

I don't know, but I would like to think I'm wiser with every year. True, one is less worried about things and more accepting that there are different levels of "success".
I like to believe I make a decent cheesecake, but swiss rolls and souffle still remain to be conquered!!! :)

Peanutts July 04, 2009 9:31 AM

Hi, I am new. Saw your lovely pizza !. It s so much better making at home isnt it:), And tastes better too :)

Simply...Gluten-free July 04, 2009 10:21 AM

I agree with you - age and wisdom do seem to come hand in hand. Too bad I wasn't as wise as I am now when I was younger. I hope you had a birthday as wonderful as you are!

Melanie July 04, 2009 12:19 PM

Carolyn Jung July 09, 2009 12:30 AM

Happy belated birthday!

And nope, you don't need a special pan to make great pizza. But a pizza stone definitely does help to get a super crispy crust.

Jayashree July 22, 2009 2:38 PM

Hope you had a wonderful birthday, Cynthia. The pizza looks delicious.
