We Heart Arnold

Remember the old television show Green Acres? Arguably the biggest star on the show was Arnold the pig. He could write his name, change channels on television, play piano and even predict the weather. Despite all of those talents, if he came to the Caribbean he might still find himself facing the butcher. We love pig – ham, chops, ribs, bacon, sausages. From snout to trotter we eat it all. Click here to read the rest of the column.

This week week I also made Pirojki/Pirogi. I first had a Pirogi while on a trip to the mid-west of the USA a few years ago. I have a very good friend that loves these so when I saw Farida of Azerbaijani Cookbook post the recipe complete with a step by step demo, I quickly bookmarked the page and set about making Pirogi. It tasted just as I remembered the first time I had one and what I like about Farida's version is that they were baked instead of fried. You've got to try making these, it's really easy and absolutely delicious. Click here for the recipe and to see how to make them.

Over at Forgive Me My Nonsense... this week, say goodbye to Randy Pausch.

You mean Piroshky? There is a store here in Seattle - Piroshky! Piroshky! We love "pig"ing out there.

I love the lustrous sheen on yours.

okay so if you like all parts of the pig, including the snout, you must see the pic of me holding a snout in a Trini market--nasty stuff girl. how ironic. I mention you in that post...

I'm seeing them for the first time !
Had something similar, but i guess that this name is a bit fancier :)
Pork is not an option for me, so i think chicken or beef would be wonderful.

I have only had Pirogi's one time in my life, when a friend made them for me around 12 years ago. The dough looks a bit different, but the recipe version you are sharing here looks wonderful!

I just read your column and it is 6 AM here, and I want pork! Roast pork for breakfast. Yea!

Hey Cynthia - you sure do have a great memory for all of Arnold's talents! I bet you can sing the entire theme song too!

TavoLini said...

Very neat! The pierogi in Detroit are quite different--more of dumpling. In northern Michigan (U.P.), pasties (pah-stees) are somewhat similar what you made (but your pirojki looks tastier)

Looks delicious, Cynthia!

Some Californias must be loving you! I thought it was Arnold as in he who acted in Terminator series and the governor of California. Then I read on and found out it was a pig! :O

I have every intention of making some potato Pirojki tomorrow - even though the only oven I have is tiny, I will make batches! Thanks for the suggestion!!

Did someone say oink? I'll take Park Avenue as Ms. Gabor stated. But I won't say no to a lovely chop, strip or loin.

We love pork too. Roast suckling pig is the big treat.

I love your description of curry pork. I'm going to try to make it with a piece of Cantonese roast pork - you know, the roast pig that hangs in the store window. FYI, I just cooked a Spanish dish - pork belly in almond milk.
