We Heart Arnold

>> Saturday, 26 July 2008

Remember the old television show Green Acres? Arguably the biggest star on the show was Arnold the pig. He could write his name, change channels on television, play piano and even predict the weather. Despite all of those talents, if he came to the Caribbean he might still find himself facing the butcher. We love pig – ham, chops, ribs, bacon, sausages. From snout to trotter we eat it all. Click here to read the rest of the column.

This week week I also made Pirojki/Pirogi. I first had a Pirogi while on a trip to the mid-west of the USA a few years ago. I have a very good friend that loves these so when I saw Farida of Azerbaijani Cookbook post the recipe complete with a step by step demo, I quickly bookmarked the page and set about making Pirogi. It tasted just as I remembered the first time I had one and what I like about Farida's version is that they were baked instead of fried. You've got to try making these, it's really easy and absolutely delicious. Click here for the recipe and to see how to make them.

Over at Forgive Me My Nonsense... this week, say goodbye to Randy Pausch.

I love the lustrous sheen on yours.

Bren@Flanboyant Eats July 27, 2008 9:52 PM

okay so if you like all parts of the pig, including the snout, you must see the pic of me holding a snout in a Trini market--nasty stuff girl. how ironic. I mention you in that post...

Beachlover July 27, 2008 10:06 PM

I'm seeing them for the first time !
Had something similar, but i guess that this name is a bit fancier :)
Pork is not an option for me, so i think chicken or beef would be wonderful.

farida July 28, 2008 1:09 PM

Cynthia,

I am soooo happy you made my Pirogi!

I am honored and flattered too:)

THANK YOU! Your pirojki turned out perfect, as I can see from the picture. They are so shiny on top:) You did a wonderful job. And my my, other pics look mouthwatering. I am getting hungry:)

Arnold never looked so good Cynthia!
I have only had Pirogi's one time in my life, when a friend made them for me around 12 years ago. The dough looks a bit different, but the recipe version you are sharing here looks wonderful!

Proud Italian Cook July 29, 2008 12:03 AM

Cynthia, You can make me some Arnold anytime! Serious yummmm, to all of this! I'm very interested in how you make your carribean ham.
Nice article!

Mochachocolata Rita July 29, 2008 2:53 AM

Tom Aarons July 29, 2008 7:09 AM

I think I might love Arnold too if I got the chance! And what a lovely blog you have. So much content!

Darius T. Williams July 29, 2008 7:55 AM

So yea, I'm loving the fact that yo love a pig as much as I do. I don't remember Green Acres, but I love me some pork.

Lori Lynn July 29, 2008 9:10 AM

I just read your column and it is 6 AM here, and I want pork! Roast pork for breakfast. Yea!

Hey Cynthia - you sure do have a great memory for all of Arnold's talents! I bet you can sing the entire theme song too!

TavoLini July 29, 2008 10:14 AM

Very neat! The pierogi in Detroit are quite different--more of dumpling. In northern Michigan (U.P.), pasties (pah-stees) are somewhat similar what you made (but your pirojki looks tastier)

Looks delicious, Cynthia!

priar's, July 30, 2008 12:47 AM

Pooh July 30, 2008 3:37 PM

Ooh! Ooh! Real pierogies! I have got to try these! I've only ever tasted the ones you get in the freezer section at the grocer's. :(

Karin July 30, 2008 6:18 PM

I didn't know pirogi were well known outside Eastern Europe. They are widely eaten in my neighbor country Finland too... stuffed with with wild mushrooms. rice, mashed potaoes ... Well, anything goes..

Simply...Gluten-free July 30, 2008 7:51 PM

Haha, I can't believe you mention Arnorld and then talk about pork! LOL!

arundati July 31, 2008 8:54 AM

I live in the mid-west, and pierogis do seem to really popular. I've only had pieriogis that were frozen from a box. :(
I'll have to try this recipe.

Lisa August 05, 2008 8:09 AM

I remember Arnold!!! That was a funny show. Your food looks fantastic, and I'm jealous of your pierogis. ;) I want some now!

tigerfish August 05, 2008 11:36 AM

Some Californias must be loving you! I thought it was Arnold as in he who acted in Terminator series and the governor of California. Then I read on and found out it was a pig! :O

veron August 07, 2008 4:29 PM

That ham looks good and is making me hungry!!

Asmita August 13, 2008 7:40 PM

I have every intention of making some potato Pirojki tomorrow - even though the only oven I have is tiny, I will make batches! Thanks for the suggestion!!

jdbauer August 15, 2008 5:26 AM

Did someone say oink? I'll take Park Avenue as Ms. Gabor stated. But I won't say no to a lovely chop, strip or loin.

KC August 15, 2008 9:01 AM

We love pork too. Roast suckling pig is the big treat.

I love your description of curry pork. I'm going to try to make it with a piece of Cantonese roast pork - you know, the roast pig that hangs in the store window. FYI, I just cooked a Spanish dish - pork belly in almond milk.
