Snacking at School

Cassava ball, egg ball and channa were my favourite snacks to have at school during the mid-morning break. However, I did not always get to purchase them because most of my school mates were more assertive in making their way to the front of the crowd gathered around the snack lady. Often, I'd end up with none of the goodies because by the time I finally reached close enough to make a request, all the cassava balls, egg balls and channa would be sold out :(

The snack lady would encourage me not to let people push in front of me and to speak loudly, shouting above the noise for what I wanted but that was not me. It's still not me. So one day, the snack lady took pity upon me. Click here to read the column and find out how she helped me to get my daily snack-fix.

Cassava balls are made by boiling and mashing it until it's creamy, seasoned with herbs, coated in a batter and fried.

Cassava ball

Here, have a bite

Cassava ball

Egg balls are boiled eggs that are encased in the cassava mixture and fried.

Egg ball

Channa is chick peas that's sauteed with white onions, green onions, hot pepper, and the star of the dish - freshly ground cumin.

Channa

All of these snacks can be eaten by themselves but we love to and always have them with sour (a hot pickle) or pepper sauce. If you'd like the recipes for any or all of the snacks here, email me.

I also wanted to update you on a change I've made effective this week as it relates to comments. Things have become really hectic at my end and as a result, I will not be able to respond as I usually do, weekly, to each and every one of the comments left on my blog. You know that I read all of them and that will not stop. I'll still make it a point to welcome new readers and I will most definitely respond directly, by email to comments left with questions or seeking clarification and of course, requesting recipes. I look forward to your continued visits and to making my weekly rounds to your blogs. Thanks for the continued support.

Those chickpeas sound fabulous! They remind me of something I had in a Peruvian restaurant, actually - and I have to wonder about the different places that I've found chickpeas. Yum!

Such a sweet story about the kind snack lady in you column. I loved reading it! Once again I've learned about totally new (to me, that is:)) dishes and ingredients by reading your blog. It's just great! The egg ball intrigues me,I'm thinking what else (something that would be easily available here) I could use to cover the boiled egg... I'll let you know, if I come up with something.

Cynthia, I always used to wonder how you manage. I think you are the most popular blogger in the whole blogosphere. You get more than 100 comments, wow. I can't even manage ten. So don 't worry about us.
Those cassava balls look so good.

Hi, Cynthia. I just found your blog via Lifespan of a Chenette. I haven't explored everything yet, but so far it's beautiful...from the recipes to the photos to the stories you tell. I am from Trinidad, but a few months ago, I accompanied my mom to one of her friend's baby shower, who is from Guyana and this was the first time I had cassava balls. They were heavenly! I love them as much as I love steamed yuca with mojo sauce from Cuban cuisine. Thank you for sharing and bringing back such a nice memory. I live in the US now, but when I was little and went to school in Trinidad, as I recall, we would have pholourie, fudge, red mango and chillibibbi (sp?) Now my mouth is also watering for more street food like doubles and fresh honey roasted peanuts.

Thank you for a wonderful blog. I will definitely be back and look forward to more of your great posts.

Ah, you poor thing - no wonder the lunch lady took pity. I used to suffer something similar when it was churros day at school, and now I can't go to a mexican restaurant without having churros at the end, whether I'm full already or not.

Cassava balls, hot and served with lashings of sour or even hot red pepper sauce. Egg balls so soft and creamy inside but crisp on the outside (always gave me hiccups probably because I scoff them!). Channa, soft and fragrant in those brown paper bags, just as you have the last channa, slippery with sour, your finger pokes through the paper bag!
Chicken foot and bara - oh YUM!
How about those pickled green mangos accompanied by fresh chilli pounded with salt?
Tamarind balls? Black sugar cake?
****Sigh****
Oh and those ladies who sold the food, they were angels.

Laavanya said...

Actually all of them look extremely fabulous.. Thank God I didn't have such tempting options at school :) Lovely pics. Such a sweet snack lady too.. nice of her to come up with an alternative to help you.

When I smell it I knew it was the same tea I was looking for and I could not find here... I could not wait to get home to try it... since yesterday I'm drinking it non stop, I will post about it later today ;)
