Squeeze & Suck, Slice & Dice or Total Body Commitment?

Take your mind out of the gutter! I am asking how you eat your mangoes! That's what this week's column is all about, the methods some of us employ when eating ripe mangoes. Read and tell me which of those techniques you employ when devouring a succulent mango, known in Hindu Mythology as the "Food of the Gods."

Diced mango

Mangoes

This week I am not going to tempt you with Mango Milkshake with Ice Cream, Stuffed Chicken with Mango Guacamole, Mango Souffle, Mango Salsa, Mango Chicken with Red Peppers or Blackbean, mango, Lime & Cilantro Salsa. But you click on the links and surrender to the temptation. I'm only presenting mangoes in the next best way I enjoy them, as a sorbet. I used David Lebovitz's recipe from The Perfect Scoop. You can also check out and send all your mango creations to Chris of Melle Cotte's Cinco de Mango event. So whether you make a mango mousse, margarita, martini, custard, cake, curry or chutney enjoy the mango season!

Elle & Ben, thank you both for the Excellent Blog award, I am chuffed. Will wear it proudly on the blog soon.

LOL, love the title Cyn... I am a slice and dice gal... :) Once while I eating a mango whole I took one bite and saw half a worm in the rest of the fruit in hand, so I don't dare biting into a whole mango anymore..

I am loving the squeeze and suck method though, I've never tried it before! Reading the descriptions of all the techniques in your column was just pure torture... I must have one right away!

Great title!
All techniques have been tried and tested many many times.
Settled on the slicing and dicing.
KOS (kid over shoulder)is going yummy, yummy at those pictures.

Ah, gutter - a friend told me that an expression she's familiar with, of the way to eat mangoes, is 'squeeze the bum, lick the mouth'! This is particularly true of mangoes that are so juicy they cannot be cut - they are called 'rasaalu' (pl.) or 'rasam' (sing.) and that is exactly how they are eaten if you don't want to make a mess!

I only tried my first fresh mango about a year ago - and have been hooked ever since! I made an amazing mango sorbet, but I love how it goes so well with fish as well.

Suganya said...

Slice, dice, squeeze, it doesn't make a difference. Eating mango is more of an experience, IMO :)

Cynthia, the title is sexy, mango's are sexy and why...you're sexy! There, I said it...let the hubby know it's the utmost complement to the wife. ;)

We had two ginormous mango trees in the yard back home. One of which grew near a tin roof that hung over the carport area. I remember running across that tin roof to gather the yellow mangoes while my mother yelled at me because she didn't think the roof would support the weight of anyone. I once fell off that tree and sprained some body part, the 25th sprain before reaching 10 years old. My love for mangoes is still rich and strong.

My all time favourite mango variety is HARUM MANIS from Indonesia. It literally means FRAGRANT SWEET. The color of the skin even when ripe is dark green with a tinge of orange by the stem area. The flesh is firm and the aroma is ambrosia.....It is not as fibrous as the others. Unfortunately, since it is highly perishable, they are for local consumptions. So if you visit Indonesia during the mango season, look for HARUM MANIS variety.

I am a mango lover:)) Cynthia, your pictures are mouthwatering and reminded me to go to the nearest grocery store to get the fruit.Nice post!

I love mangoes! I eat them when not overripe and still crunchy...

I either mix the cut flesh with passion fruit pulp, prepare them in the Thai way with sticky rice, make salsa, etc...

Your pictures are absolutely stunning!

Cheers,

Rosa

I like it raw and juicy! Hehehe. There is one kind of mango that in Mexico is called honey drop, or something like that, and that is the most delicious mango I've ever eaten. I love mangoes!
Thanks for the mention :)

Hmmm. I would have to say slice and dice. Mango sorbet is one of my favorites. Mine never looks quite that vibrant, though. I love your photos. That mango jumps right off the screen!

I've got that book and I am SO making this! The mangos that we get here (imported) are really sad compared to your big juicy ones, which I would do anything to squeeze and suck!

Lisa said...

Oh, my goodness, I'm dying here. Dying for a good mango. We simply cannot get anything decent, and when I think of the varieties I used to enjoy in Grenada . . . do you know, I can't even remember the name of my favorite one, now? That's just sad. The sorbet looks beyond awesome. Oh, and my preferred method is to halve it and do the "cube" thing. Even then, I pretty much take a bath in it!

daphne said...

yum yum! I wish mangoes are in season now again! hehe

My dad had mango trees in our backyard in guyana... its incredible the different tastes between the different variety. My preference was the beautifully curvy creamy mango with cheeks blushing so sinfully... i used to love squeeze and suck... but now as I'm older, I love slice and dice...but always, I devour completely with only a dried seed remaining.

Cynthia, I'm craving mangos right now! You take such beautiful photo's! each and everyone is so enticing!!!

I knew exactly what this entry was about by just reading the title :). I had my mango fix yesterday, it was sooo good, I didnt even sprinkle any salt and pepper. I do not like when a mango is overly mushily ripe, I love when it is sweetish, but is still firm and has a tiny touch of green. I usually begin by slicing and dicing the mango into diamonds, and end by sucking the seed. Mangoes are something that I can get completely lost in. The fact that they are good for you- bonus!

Urban Vegan said...

Food of the gods, indeed. I eat mangos however I can. I know, being American and having only tasted mangos from Mexico, that my palette has not even scratched the surface.

The mangoes are so ripe and a beautiful golden colour! This type of mango (green yellowish skin with pinkish bottom) is very expensive here. How nice to enjoy homemade mango sorbet.. yummy

Emiline said...

Mangoes are so popular this week!
I went shopping the other day and there was a huge crate of them on sale.
I've had bad luck with mangoes. They're either under or over ripe. I can never seem to get a good dice out of it, like your picture.
I wonder if it's just where I live.

tigerfish said...

After sucking on the mango dices intact on skin, I will suck the seed which tends to have some mango remains. Boy, I am a sucker for mangoes!

I'd be of the slice and dice variety too... but you certainly got me thinking about other ways to treat a mango :)

Karin said...

Isn't mango the most lovely fruit? One of my personal favorites. However, I don't think the flat seed which runs throughout most of the fruit is lovely. It is a really nasty seed. I work around it.

Maryann said...

Your mango sorbet looks divine, Cynthia!

yum! i just had mangoes for the first time this season a few days ago! I have trouble with the cross-hatch slicing though -- I can never cut them in half properly without destroying them!

What awesome photos, Cynthia! Love the way you've taken the first one. You're right about mangoes being the food of the gods in Hinduism. There's a rather famous story revolving around a mango in Hindu mythology. Suffice it to say that a mango was responsible for splitting a family (albeit temporarily)!

Chennette said...

definitely not a squueze and suck...for me it's either go wholesale into the messiness of grabbing the peeled mango or the uber-sterile approach of slicing away :-) No in betweens.

Those mangos looks really good, especially the mango ice cream! Nice photos!
