Golden Apple Love

Photobucket

This was one of those weeks I drew a blank as to what to write about. I set about making some stewed guavas, you know, to get the creative juices flowing. Nothing. Nada. Then I went to work, first day of the semester and in chatting with a colleague, inspiration struck. You'll have to click here to read how it all unfolded and to learn more about this fruit we call golden apple.

I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. And if you need anything, you know what you have to do. Email me.

Yum. I haven't eaten breakfast yet and now I want some pancakes with stewed guavas. On our farm at home, aside from guavas, we have a big golden apple tree. In Belize people love to eat golden apples green with salt and pepper or with hot sauce. I am guessing that you do the same in Guyana. But I have never seen a golden apple crumble before! (For those northerners who are wondering, ripe golden apples DO NOT taste like an apple. Actually, the tropical fruit that tastes most like an apple is a mature, but still green, mango, when it has been cooked. You can make a green mango sauce with them and it will taste almost exactly like applesauce).

I love guavas, too bad we don't get many of them up here in winterland. I have never eaten, or seen, golden apples before but they also look delicious.

I have learned something new today! Yay!

These fruits look so good! I have never heard of Golden Apples. Everything you made with it is great. Glad you found a easier way to cut them now. That juice looks so refreshing. And the gauva over those pancakes looks like pure bliss!

I'm a little embarassed to admit that I've never had a guava and I have never even heard of a golden apple. But really they look so beautiful and lovely that I might like to try one.

ah pommecythere! (you know we Trinis like to use the French creole names)
I love it with salt and pepper or ripe. Not a fan of the juice, but that is me and some juices. Love it as kuchela too.
The crumble looks very interesting. Now, do I go search for pommecythere (or June plum as they call it in Jamaica)?

Cynthia, I love reading your articles and enjoy the wealth in your vocabulary. We learn about so many things we didn't even know existed. As I was reading your article I had in mind the golden apples we have in Europe and I was thinking how could you get blisters on your fingers by peeling apples and now reading all the comments all my queries have been solved. I haven't eater guavas before as well but I am sure they must be delicious. Your recipes look great just looking at those pictures. My mouth has been saliving from the first glimpse of your first picture until now.

Your golden apples and stewed guava look delish.

We don't have either, here, but I'm wondering if I can find canned guava.

Hi Cynthia,
Oh... you call these Golden Apple. What a great name!
We have this fruit here in M'sia too. But we rarely eat when the skin turned orange color. We take it when they are green and serve with some little salt or "Rojak Shrimp Paste". You won't believe we even serve with "driep pulms' powder"...Trust me! it taste fabulous! :)

Dear Cynthia,
Firstly, I love the new layout of your blog. I have been away without internet connection, so I am just catching up with blog reading now.

I am very curious about these golden apple. the ripe flesh reminds me of what we call chiku in Singapore, but the seed is very different. i'll have to read your article and also do a bit of googling.

Those golden apples look so small and delicious....

Miri said...

The picture truly said it all - what a luscious spread....I havent heard of golden apples before, but they looked very familiar! I googled the word and found that it is actually from the mango family!!! No wonder it seemed familiar - and the fibre you were talking about, seemed much like some of the varieties of mango you get here, where you are better off just punching a hole in the skin and sucking the pulp out, rather than trying to cut it and eat it!

Lori Lynn said...

Cynthia- your photos ALWAYS speak for themselves. Fabulous as usual. I love the pancakes.

We call these "Jew" Plums or "June" Plums. They are so yummy when they are ripe. But some of us can't wait for them to ripen so we pick them green and eat them with a little salt! lol :)

I have to try that Jew plum crumble! It looks so good.

Cynthia said...

Lyra - yeah, in Guyana it is eaten with salt and pepper too, the ripe and the green ones.

The crumble was an experiment. :)
