A Duck Curry Competition

>> Saturday, 3 July 2010

Cooking competitions have only become popular for the past several years in the Caribbean. We are more into food fairs. In countries with large East Indian populations such as Guyana and Trinidad & Tabago, Duck Curry Competitions have become annual events and always draw large crowds. Last Sunday, here in Barbados, we got another taste of Guyana, this time through a duck curry competition. Yours truly was one of the judges! Read all about it in this week's column.

Duck Curry is always cooked as a celebratory meal and often served with dhal puri or rice and dhal. I made Duck Curry to celebrate my birthday.

The cooking device took us back to basics - a coal pot!

Have a look at the album of the day's events. And check out Chris' Trini take on Duck Curry.

To all my USA friends and readers - Happy 4th of July!

Had the opportunity last summer to be a judge at a comp in Toronto, but scheduling didn't allow for it. So wished I had gone. Hopefully I'll be invited this yr again.

Happy cooking

chris...

p.s. thanks for the link love.

First of all 'Wish you a very Happy Birthday!'
Now do I really need to tell you how crazy I am for the word curry and on top of that you are talking about something related to duck?? Ok, now you are killing me!
Loved all the pics like always!

Nice pic of the coal pot. My grandma used to cook on something similar to that....it is called kummatti.

Hi Cynthia! I enjoyed the article and your photos. The older gentleman with his hand on his hip was too funny. :-) And the picture of the coal pot is classic. That's the first time I think I've seen one.

What great fun! They were lucky to have you as a judge. Tell me, was the decision unanimous? That's a challenging thing to cook and how yummy!

That's sweet that a married couple won.
