Healthy. Delicious. Addictive

Make it once and you'll never go back to store-bought - Granola that is! And, it's not just for breakfast. Check out this week's column for ways to use granola and for the recipe.

I make batches and share with friends...

Have it for breakast with milk...

Or yogurt with fruit compote

Thanks to my dear friends Farida (and Sonia) I now make my own yogurt - again, this is one of those things that once you make it at home and realize how easy it is, you'll be making it over and over again. For the yogurt recipe, click here and here's the granola recipe.

I like to eat them as a snack...you know, like eating peppery peanuts, one after the other...

Fresh Local and Best April 10, 2010 12:43 PM

Homemade granola is the best! and yes, they do make great gifts!

Cilantro April 10, 2010 1:00 PM

I would love to have them with as a snack. What you said is absolutely right, homemade tastes better always.
I somehow cannot eat anything sweet in the morning for breakfast. It could be due to a habit back home since we normally do not make anything sweet for breakfast. My daughter is just the opposite because she grew up here.

MaryMoh April 10, 2010 4:22 PM

Looks very healthy and delicious. I would love to try. I think I'll snack on them in front of the TV :D

Sue April 10, 2010 4:25 PM

Fantastic recipe! I love the idea of the pumpkin seeds. I make my granola in the microwave with NO oil, but the timing is tricky.

Gorgeous pictures too, as always.

I think I once actually had a yogurt maker, which is just a set of small pots in a temperature controlled unit. So unnecessary.

Great recipe, great pictures.
I add unsweetened grated coconut, 2 tablespoons molasses, and some whole flax seeds to mine.

Mona April 10, 2010 7:03 PM

Cynthia, I also make yogurt at home regularly. But during winters the yogurt doesn't set well sometimes. I remember back home in India during peak summers, yogurt was ready in just 2 hours due to the intense heat.
I have never made granola till now at home. But this time I will. Bookmarked, thanks for sharing.

Memória April 10, 2010 10:04 PM

I've yet to make granola and yogurt because I'm not crazy about both items. Thanks to you, I think I'll try them out, though. I don't like nuts, so I hope i can manage to make some decent, yet healthy granola haha.

WizzyTheStick April 10, 2010 10:59 PM

I've been making my own homemade yoghurt for some years. I can't stand that sugary stuff in the supermarket. Never thought to make my own granola. You're on to something here I think it's time to start making my own

Manasi April 11, 2010 12:16 AM

Me? with fresh milk in the morning! and it is really pretty addictive :)

David T. Macknet April 11, 2010 6:13 AM

Oh, yeah - not only is it tastier than store-bought, but once you've done it & realize that it's about $0.25 worth of ingredients per bowl, you'll never go back to paying $1.50 per bowl! :)

aforkfulofspaghetti April 11, 2010 6:51 AM

I've only recently become switched on to granola, and you're right - it is addictive. I now really miss my fix if, for any reason, I don't get to have some during the day!

Nina Timm April 11, 2010 8:24 AM

Your photographs really bring out the "health aspects" of granola. Looks like a image in a glossy health magazine!!

Sophie April 11, 2010 9:06 AM

Yummmm,...

Sonia April 11, 2010 1:45 PM

Hey Dear,

My name on the blog!!!! It thrills me so much. By the way a friend is helping me with a simple wordpress blog so I will have a public one very soon. Also, we get raw milk here in Namibia so I have been experimenting so much - made cultured butter last week which was delicious and got wonderful buttermilk as a by-product!
I miss you, your cooking and B'dos.

Love,
Sonia

Sangeetha April 11, 2010 3:27 PM

Yum....that's the breakfast of champions!

~~louise~~ April 11, 2010 8:25 PM

I have been talking about making home made granola for months now. I think it's high time I get moving!!!

I have a fresh batch of yogurt in the fridge and I am straining two cups for cheese. I will never buy store bought yogurt again, ever! Your friends blog gave me a great idea; storing it in a mason jar. I have this quirk about yogurt touching metal so I use plastic whenever I serve it and just yesterday, I finally found a glass spoon!!! A mason jar is just perfect. Now, you have inspired me to finally make that granola!!! Thank you, Cynthia:)

Ivy April 12, 2010 1:13 AM

I also enjoy making my own yoghurt but never made granola before. Sounds like a great idea. Have a wonderful week.

Jayashree April 12, 2010 2:16 AM

Susan from Food Blogga April 12, 2010 8:39 PM

I couldn't agree with you more, Cynthia. I never buy store-bought granola anymore. Homemade is infinitely better!

5 Star Foodie April 12, 2010 9:38 PM

Yum! Homemade granola sounds fantastic! It would be wonderful with acai!

krystyna April 12, 2010 9:44 PM

Thank you Cynthia so much for this great, yummy and healthy recipe.
Homemade granola is really healthy and it is a good investment.
Long ago, when I lived in Poland, I often did granola.
Now, I forgot about granola.
You gave me a good idea.

Eu Mulher April 12, 2010 9:53 PM

Hello darling! Okay?

I love granola, mostly done at home with ingredients we choose. I'll look up the recipe for the yogurt and granola as well.

Kisses and great weekend!

aquadaze April 12, 2010 10:39 PM

Homemade granola rocks!

Veggie Belly April 12, 2010 11:25 PM

Yummmmmmm! I just made granola today! what a coincidence! I keep reading about the instant oats debate - do you prefer to use instant oats or old fashiones?

Soma April 13, 2010 10:45 AM

I could snack on these all day long!!

Jenn AKA The Leftover Queen April 13, 2010 11:44 AM

Your granola looks beautiful Cynthia! And I am totally with you on the yogurt - once you make homemade, you never go back!

Aparna April 13, 2010 2:02 PM

I can see how long I've been away. Love the new look of your blog.
That's some gorgeous granola. Home-made is almost always the best.

shriya April 13, 2010 2:30 PM

Awesome granola recipe. Never made it before. But sure gonna try your recipe. As usual beautiful clicks.

Akal's Saappadu April 13, 2010 3:26 PM

that's a nice recipe to do home-made fiber rich cereals, that's a fantastic recipe, easy and not really fussy!!! I love it and as I love rich nutty cereals, this is definitely for me!!! will try it !!!

I've tried doing home made yoghurt but once I got it sticky, maybe because the room temperature was insufficient??? and as for the milk, should I use fresh milk ( like unpasteurised fresh milk) or pasteurised UHT will do? thank you for the recipes and have a nice day!!!

Paz April 13, 2010 11:24 PM

I'd love to make my own granola. I just had some store-bought today.

I haven't been able to figure out the difference between Müsli and Granola. They both seem interchangeable and involve a combination of rolled oats with some other stuff.

Orlando personal injury lawyer April 16, 2010 5:52 PM

Nice granola fixation. Your photos are nice.

farida April 16, 2010 7:48 PM

Carolyn Jung April 16, 2010 9:02 PM

I just want to crunch on a big mouthful of that right now. I always keep granola on hand for my yogurt. The combo can't be beat, especially with some summer berries thrown in for good measure.

Arwen from Hoglet K April 17, 2010 2:31 AM

Your muesli looks lovely, especially with the yoghurt and fruit compote!
