Khichri & Kedgeree - Good at Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner!

Khichri - a dish with it's origins in India has travelled to England, to the Caribbean and I am sure to other places where there are large populations of Indian migrants. In this week's column, read about the dish re-interpreted in England and it's place in the Caribbean.

Both dishes have their stars, for Khichri it is lentils and for Kedgeree it is smoked fish

One od my friend love kichiri, but i must say i am not a huge fan . Love the colour.

Khichri (and kadhi) is the ultimate comfort food. There are so many versions as well.
I make a plain khichri (basic tempering of ghee, cumin g.chile, curry leaves) with rice and yellow moong.
Eat this with a generous drizzle of ghee, warm comfort!!

I love Kedgeree!! My mom used to make it with left over fried fish, I haven't had it in a few years but still have fond memories.

Never have this dish before. look good!!!
But I do love smoked fish esp smoked catfish with cassava leaves in spiced coconut milk

Wow...I love khichdi with kadhi ! Will try out the kedgeree as soon as I find out where I can get some smoked fish :)

I guess Parsi cuisine or Anglo-Indian cuisine has very similar thing like Kedgeree also,but they have it as lunch or may be dinner ..smoked haddock can be well paired with kedegree ..and yeah you are right there food recipes travel and people adapt according to it ...Nice presentations there !!

Did not know ant kedgeree but khitchri is a favorite. Even though I try to add more veggies plain khitchari is more satisfying.

Cynthia, you make me hungry even when I"m full. My Grandmother's recipe was quite a frugal one, and was just divine, but I am going to try yours. It is a perfect rainy or snowy day stick to your ribs dish, and yours look super delicious and extra comfy for those days. Thanks for sharing.

Kichiri is something I don't do very often too , but not because I cook dhal very often :) maybe because I almost forgot that this dish existed :) btw, thanks for the reminder!

Kedgeree is something I'm dicovering; sounds very interesting with the smoked fish and eggs!! nice recipe!!

For being an Indian, not tried Khichdi at all. But being a South Indian, I've eaten more than my share of Pongal :) Kedgeree is new to me, but it looks so similar!

Probably pongal for breakfast- but not khichri! The kedgeree has a interesting flavor with smoked fish!

Ah, khichiree (sp?) - I remember my grandmother making it with some saltfish thrown in and ground provisions. Mom too - I like it soupy, although there's sometimes a nuttiness to the dhal when it's dry that's nice.

I can't believe I am going to say this ... (neither would my mother, considering the fuss I made growing up) ... I love Khichri .. especially on rushed days or when I need some comforting. It's absolutely the best with home-made curd. I am going to have to try the Kedgeree, soon!

I did not know about the British version. In Bengal we eat 2 kinds; one regular version with masoor dal and vegetables and it wet and runny. During festivals and puja we do khichri with moong dal and basmati rice which is a dry version like we did.

Oh my gosh, beleive it or not…like minds work alike:)

I am simply stunned to see ‘kitchri and kedgeree’ at your blog...guess I am awfully late to see this post!!! Wow, gosh…like minds work alike, what a wild coincidence.:) Even I did same theme for my column (Oxford Eagle) this month 2nd Dec…how ‘Kitchri evolved into Kedgeree’.:) Infact gave them both the recipes (authentic Indian version plus Fancy Kedgeree today)just like you did:) I am so happy to share this with you.:)

Khichri-curry is very good food. It is the only dish which is very good when there is diarrhoea.
