Eating at the Table

>> Saturday, 1 August 2009

Conversations that trigger a memory of one’s upbringing and how it has influenced or impacted our lives often yield two reactions – we marvel at the freedom some people had or we are astonished by the discipline enforced. In this week's column I share with you some of the rules my parents (read my Mother) laid down when it came to Eating at the Table, such as seeking persmission to leave the table before everyone was done eating, the turning off of the television at meal times etc. Some of you will laugh as you read, some of you will nod your heads in empathy. Click here to read.

A few week ago, while blog hopping, I saw this dish and recipe (Pepes Ikan Woku) at my friend, Pepy's blog and could not resist making it. I gathered the ingredients within the week and made this dish of fish steamed in banana leaves. It was no ordinary steamed fish. The flavours of ginger, lemongrass, curry leaves, kaffir lime leaves etc will have you going back for more, and more. I even saved some of the aromatic paste mixture and used it to steam some shrimp. Please give this a try if you can. Here is Pepy's recipe.

Here's a kicked-up iced tea that I think many will enjoy, especially in this heat. It's my lemongrass grass iced tea with excellent dark rum, mint and generous squirts of fresh lemon or lime juice. To give my tea the colour, I used Demerara sugar to make my simple syrup.

INGREDIENTS

  • 6 lemongrass stalks, bruised
  • 2 1/4 cups water
  • Simple syrup to taste
  • 1/4 cup dark rum (or more to suit your taste)
  • Mint leaves, bruised
  • Ice
  • Lemon or lime wedges

METHOD

  1. Add lemongrass and water to saucepot, cover and bring to boil. Boil until reduced by half, then remove from heat and let come to room temperature
  2. Sweeten with simple syrup
  3. Stir in rum
  4. To serve: bruise mint leaves and place in glass along with ice cubes, pour in tea, squeeze lemon or lime, stir and drink (you can opt to get some extra lemongrass, cut the stalks in half, and serve with drinks to stir)

Cynthia help. What are kaffir lime leaves and how are they different from the leaves on my regular lime tree? The drink looks very refreshing. Must try.

I loved your article. That's so fun to hear about other people's eating rules. We had a set seat at the table - my brother, sister and I. I wanted to change my seat once to my brother's seat. I still remember him grabbing his plate and licking it, so I wouldn't move there. It NEVER occurred to me that I could just move his plate and sit where I wanted. He won THAT one, but I'm sure I got him back some other way.

Yummie yum!

Oh wow, the fish recipe looks amazing. Quick question: where do you get the fresh banana leaves or are they frozen?

Eating at the table brought back quite a few memories!
We had the "no swinging dangly feet" too. :)
And waiting for everyone to finish before we got up. We do this even now, though we do sometimes eat in front of the TV too!
One of my Dad's rules was that we had to have one serving of whatever was cooked for the meal, even if we didn't like it. And if we (the kids) protested, we got a second helping!! And we had to finish it all.
The other rule was we didn't leave food on our plates, so we served ourselves only as much as we wanted and ate it all. No wasting.

Both these rules have today made less fussy about what we eat, and thankful for what we have at our tables.

The fish looks and sounds fantastic! In Colombia is traditional to cook fish in banana leaves.....I love the flavor!

I have never made ice tea at home but I'll try as soon as possible

doggybloggy August 02, 2009 11:02 AM

all I need to hear is 'banana leaves' and my mouth waters with anticipation....the fish looks so succulent.... I can only get frozen banana leaves - how special to one day have fresh!

Am drooling over that Ice tea

A_and_N August 02, 2009 4:15 PM

You know, I'm a vegetarian. But every time I come here, I end up drooling over the texture of your food. You capture it beautifully! I should ask you your camera details :)

I will send my details soon. Promise! :)

Bake your cake and eat it too August 02, 2009 5:20 PM

OHHHH! I am craving fish so badly right now and that looks amazing! Speaking of peoples eating rules, I had the most fun when I was young in Malaysia for the summers when we got to eat curry & rice with our hands. No utensils! Fun fun! but so messy!

Chef Jeena August 02, 2009 5:29 PM

I would love some of your fish it looks really good the colour looks so appetizing!

Helene August 03, 2009 1:09 AM

That fish, yum. I had problem reading the blog. Did you change the fonts?

Love your pictures.

toni August 03, 2009 1:46 AM

I'm loving the fish dish - seriously loving it! And I now have a great idea for the kaffir lime infused simple syrup that I made - thanks!

Oh - I think your mom and mine went to the same school. Those rules sound VERY familiar to me!

Odete August 03, 2009 2:23 AM

This food looks fantastic. If I wasn't a big fish fan.
And the drink very tempting.

Peanutts August 03, 2009 3:28 AM

I dont use alcohol in my cooking, so what can i use instead of rum, not just in this recipe but for any recipe that calls for rum

MeetaK August 03, 2009 3:36 AM

what a great lovely dinner time meal. my dad was always very particular about our table manners. at times it was torture for my brother and me but in the ned - now we understand. however, now when i see tom being strict with soeren i do remember the times we hated being seated at the dinner table! so i try to go easy on soeren - but tom in this case is the stricter!

Parita August 03, 2009 4:12 AM

healthy and tasty steamed fish! that ice tea is so tempting...
I have an Award for you... plz collect it from my blog

veron August 03, 2009 11:31 AM

I had to laugh at your kitchen rules although ours weren't as strict. My grandmother always admonished me about chewing loudly.
This fish looks delicious!

TavoLini August 03, 2009 11:32 AM

Fish looks excellent!!

I liked reading your article--we, too, had some hard and fast rules. Must put your napkin on your lap, chew with your mouth closed, clean up afterwards, and wait until everyone is done eating. Now, we do eat at the table fairly regularly...but on weekends I find myself sitting back and watching a movie while eating on the couch, too ;)

Cilantro August 03, 2009 11:48 AM

Good read about 'Eating at the Table'. My parents insisted we all eat together for dinner and we were told to wait until all of us were done- No TV at this time. It was nice since we were able to talk about the events that day.
Now it is all different with no set rules although I insist on my daughter not watching TV while eating.

pigpigscorner August 03, 2009 5:05 PM

haha the rules...so very true. The fish looks really delicious and the lemongrass tea..wow!

veggie belly August 03, 2009 5:29 PM

oh my gosh! i want some of that lemongrass drink NOW!!

Jeanne August 04, 2009 8:08 AM

Oh my word - that iced tea looks like exactly what we needed at our BBQ over the weekend! And how funny - I wrote about the general decline in table manners in my Food24 column last week too! http://www.food24.com/Food24/Article/0,,1-12-14-66_23201,00.html

JennDZ - The Leftover Queen August 05, 2009 3:49 PM

That tea looks positively refreshing. I can just grab it off the screen and take a sip! The steamed fish dish looks great too!
I loved your article too! Made me smile!

Mandira August 05, 2009 6:43 PM

The fish looks fantastic Cynthia! I can finish that in one go...

The Culinary Chase August 06, 2009 4:20 AM

Great article on rules for the dining room table.......a bit like how we grew up! We were forbidden to rest our feet on the rungs of the chair even though our legs weren't long enough to reach the floor! :) Love the iced tea! Cheers!

nora@ffr August 06, 2009 3:23 PM

My parents had very strict rules when we were growing up too. Now, in their old age, I see them breaking most of them! hehe. They've mellowed somewhat. :-)
